North Sydney Flute Studio provides superior flute pedagogy to music students of all ages in the form of one-on-one private tuition. In a supportive environment, students have the oppor–tunity to receive expert guidance from internationally acclaimed flautists David Silva and Jonathan Henderson, working to help each individual reach their musical goals.

Students of North Sydney Flute Studio can observe others' lessons and participate in advanced group performance classes, while the addition of masterclasses with invited guest artists gives valuable exposure to different teaching styles. Our flexible schedule includes after-school, weekend and holiday lessons. Our studio is located on Blues Point Road, a few minutes walk from North Sydney train station and the Victoria Cross metro.

Meet the Tutors

Jonathan Henderson Bmus Mmus MA PhD

 

Jonathan Henderson (b.1987) trained with Europe’s leading flute professors and has carved out a multifaceted performance career spanning from Australia to the Nordic countries.

Between 2012 and 2019 he was principal flautist of the Estonian National Opera Orchestra. As guest principal, he has performed with the Turku and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestras in Finland, and in Australia with the Opera Australia Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.

As guest lecturer, Jonathan has worked with students at the Latvian Academy of Music, University of Queensland School of Music, Queensland Conservatorium and Newcastle Conservatorium. He has been externally engaged by ANAM and the Australian Institute of Music as a private instructor and worked as flute tutor for the Cranbrook School in Sydney.

After completing his early musical training at the Queensland Conservatorium with Gerhard Mallon and privately with Sally Walker, Jonathan continued his studies in Germany with Felix Renggli at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and in Switzerland with Jacques Zoon at the Haute École de Musique Genève.

David Silva Bmus Mmus MA PgDip

1st Prize-Winner at the 2023 National Flute Association Young Artists Competition, flautist David Silva has rapidly established his career as an outstanding flutist.

Other accomplishments include the 1st prize at the Australian Flute Festival Competition, 1st prize at the 23rd Estoril Interpretation Competition (Portugal), 2nd prize at Clara Wieck Schumann Competition 2022 (Italy), 3rd prize at the Dutch International Flute Competition 2021 and 4th prize at 2022 Tampere Flute Fest Young Artists Competition (Finland).

After completing his undergraduate education in Portugal, he continued his studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels, and the Haute École de Musique in Geneva. His primary mentors abroad were Carlos Bruneel and Michel Bellavance (Flute), Jerica Pavli and Katlijn Sergeant (Piccolo) and Serge Saitta and Anna Besson (Traverso).

 

David Silva has worked as a flute tutor for the Cranbrook School and Knox Grammar School in Sydney.
